Taxation System

The Taxation System governs how gold flows from player transactions into an Alliance’s Alliance Gold Coffer. Taxes are voted on weekly by citizens through the Township Voting system and directly impact the strength of Weekly Buffs and Militia Games funding.

Overview

  • Taxes are collected whenever players make purchases from NPC vendors in townships.
  • The township where the transaction occurs determines which Alliance receives the tax revenue.
  • Each Alliance’s Governor and citizens vote weekly to set the Alliance’s tax rate.
  • The chosen rate applies to all transactions until the next Weekly Reset.
  • Taxes fund the Gold Coffer, which powers the Alliance’s weekly and temporary buffs.

Tax Rates

There are three selectable tax levels available through weekly voting:

Tax Rate Percentage Description Strategic Impact
Low Tax Rate 5% Encourages player spending and local trade. Slower Gold Coffer growth, higher player profits.
Medium Tax Rate 15% Balanced approach between growth and player comfort. Steady Gold Coffer gains with moderate prices.
High Tax Rate 25% Aggressive taxation to rapidly fund buffs and events. Strongest Coffer growth, but reduced trade activity.

How Taxes Work

  • The tax rate applies to all NPC vendor purchases.
  • Taxes are automatically deducted from the buyer’s total and deposited into the **township’s Gold Coffer**.
  • The township’s Coffer contributes its balance to the parent **Alliance Gold Coffer** each Weekly Reset.
  • Example:
    • A player buys an item for 1,000 gold in Minoc under the Minoc Federation’s 15% tax rate.
    • 150 gold (15%) goes into Minoc’s township coffer.
    • That gold then merges with the Minoc Federation’s Alliance Coffer at reset.

Cross-Alliance Spending

Taxes are paid to the Alliance of the town where the transaction occurs — regardless of the player’s own citizenship.

Example:

  • A Yew Rebellion citizen makes a purchase in Britain (Brit-Trin Alliance territory).
  • That tax payment goes to the **Brit-Trin Alliance Gold Coffer**, not Yew Rebellion.

This mechanic encourages inter-alliance trade and economic warfare between regions.

Voting and Adjustments

  • Tax rates are set via the weekly Township Voting ballot.
  • Citizens vote between Low, Medium, and High Tax Rates.
  • Governors can:
    • Follow the citizen vote, or
    • Override it using Executive Authority.
  • New tax rates take effect immediately after the Weekly Reset.

Economic Impact

The chosen tax rate influences more than just revenue:

  • Higher tax rates strengthen Alliance Buffs faster (by filling Gold Coffers).
  • Lower tax rates may attract trade from other Alliances.
  • Alliances with strong merchant zones often use low or medium taxes to grow economically long-term.

Developer Notes

  • The Taxation System is central to Alliance strategy, balancing player economy and communal progression.
  • During Beta 2, tax rate tiers (5% / 15% / 25%) may be adjusted for balance.
  • Long-term plans include visual tax indicators in township menus and merchant tooltips.
